Meadow Lands Elementary Earns American Heart Association Award for Fitness

american heart 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/20/13) – Meadow Lands Elementary School has been recognized by the American Heart Association as a National Gold Level Fit-Friendly Worksite.

Matt Ogden, representing the local chapter of the American Heart Association, will attend an assembly at MLES at 7:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, to present a plaque and share brief remarks.

To qualify for the national honor, Meadow Lands completed a rigorous application process, which included documenting compliance with at least 10 areas of criteria in the categories of physical activity, nutrition, culture and smoke-free facility. MLES excelled by meeting 12 criteria; a summary is included below.

Amy Bouchard, MLES physical education instructor, said, “Meadow Lands Elementary School’s staff has programs in place for our students that promote fitness, nutrition and encourage daily physical activity. These programs go hand-in-hand with the daily commitment of our staff to educate students about making healthy lifestyle choices. We are honored to receive this award as affirmation of that commitment.”

MLES Principal Kevin Lowe said Meadow Lands has earned a reputation across the state and country as a school that promotes health and fitness. “Meadow Lands is the only school in Kentucky that earned recognition as an Active Lifestyle Model School – an honor we received for four consecutive years” until the program was disbanded in 2011. “Meadow Lands teachers and staff value the role that physical activity plays in enhancing learning,” Lowe said.

The presentation of the AHA award will be followed by a recognition of the school’s outstanding results from its recent “Jump Rope for Heart” benefit in which MLES students surpassed their goal by raising more than $3,500 for the American Heart Association. “Even more impressive is the fact that in our nine-year history, Meadow Lands has raised more than $25,000 for the American Heart Association’s fight against America’s number-one killer, heart disease,” Bouchard said.

To celebrate this achievement, MLES students earned the opportunity to participate in an “Extreme Mr. Lowe Makeover.” Students have collaborated to develop a plan to give their Principal a fun makeover. Details are a secret, but it will be a hilarious and memorable event!
