hcc 01 300HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (4/3/13) – Hopkinsville Community College (HCC) was approved last week by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System Board of Regents to offer the certificate program for Retail Pharmacy Technician. The certificate is designed to prepare the student for a career in community or other pharmacy environments, working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist (RPh). The courses will prepare the student to take the national Pharmacy Certification Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

Retail pharmacy technicians earn about $13 an hour; their annual wages average about $12,000 a year more than what a high school graduate earns, according to the American Association of Community Colleges. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the number of job openings for pharmacy technicians across the country is expected to increase by 29 percent by 2020. That is much faster than the average for all jobs.

Dr. Pat Lake, Interim President/CEO commented, “HCC continues to aggressively pursue its agenda to increase opportunity for students who demand education and training in allied health careers, and the addition of this certificate enables us to provide the workforce local employers require. Community support for expansion of allied health programs remains strong, and the college has positioned itself to respond to employer and student needs.”

HCC will offer a certificate in pharmacy technology this fall, however some basic classes like introduction to computing and communication can be taken beginning May 20, with the first 5-week summer session, or July 1, the college’s second 5-week session. Fall classes begin August 19, and HCC is now accepting students in any field of study for the fall semester. For admissions and financial aid information, call (270) 707-3700 or visit the website at www.hopkinsville.kctcs.edu.

Students interested in the Retail Pharmacy Technician program can contact Beth Beverly at (270) 707-3869 for additional information.
