hopkinsville martinlutherkingjr elementary 300CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Ky. (4/8/13) – CCPS is the proud recipient of the Early Childhood Grant.
 
The Early Childhood grant stems from the Governor’s Office, where Governor Steven Beshear established the Early Childhood Advisory Council. He charged this body with reviewing the delivery of early childhood development and education services in Kentucky and recommending improvements to the system.
 
At the March 28 School Board Meeting, members approved the grant for Early Childhood- a new grant funded by the state. Sarah Newman, principal at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary has accepted the new position as the Regional Community Early Childhood Coordinator to oversee the recently approved grant. The position will take effect immediately.
 
“I am excited about this opportunity,” says Newman. “With my background in elementary and early childhood education, I will work to grow and enhance school readiness outcomes to support our early childhood programs through early care and education along with family support and engagement.”
 
Newman brings more than 20 years of teaching and administrative experience to her new position. She has served as a classroom teacher for 11 years and as the Principal of both Highland and MLK, Jr. Elementary Schools for the past 9 years. In addition to these experiences, she also provides expertise in hiring, evaluating and supervising staff members.
 
Superintendent Mary Ann Gemmill says, “We are excited about the experience and enthusiasm Ms. Newman brings to this position. We are confident in Ms. Newman’s abilities and look forward to working with her to grow our early childhood programs. She has a strong background in many areas which we felt was extremely important for an early childhood advocate.”
 
The Regional Community Early Childhood Coordinator (CECC) will serve regional community early childhood councils by engaging community partners. The coordinator will also work to support the development of effective councils that will design and implement local strategies to improve school readiness outcomes. Other responsibilities of the CECC include: year-round communications with the Early Childhood Council, managing curriculum and activities of the program, promoting priorities of improving early care and education settings/family support, and coordinating yearly trainings for site staff. Newman will oversee programs in the following counties: Christian, Todd, Muhlenberg and Hopkins.
 
Tim McGinnis, former Superintendent of Trigg County Public Schools, will serve as the interim Principal at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School.
