Hopkinsville Seal 01 300HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (4/30/13) – Mayor Dan Kemp announced today the 2013 Summer in the City Internship Program application deadline will be extended to May 1. The internship offers a $500 Mayor’s Scholars stipend to interns who successfully complete the three-week program. “We thought it important to extend the application deadline in order to give all local students the greatest chance to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about city government while gaining valuable career experience,” said Mayor Kemp.

The Summer in the City Internship Program is an initiative Mayor Kemp launched during his first year in office in cooperation with local high schools. The program seeks to provide students the opportunity to learn more about city government while gaining experience in career fields such as journalism, information technology, video/television production/editing, law, history, and archiving. Interns also receive workplace readiness and interview technique training, conduct research, assist with archiving, and provide administrative support. The internship program culminates with each intern making a project presentation on a topic of his or her choosing.

“We are excited to offer up to four interns the chance to participate in the program. To be eligible for the program, applicants must be current high school juniors or seniors, Christian County residents, and 16 years old by June 1, 2013,” said City of Hopkinsville representative Nikki Radford. “They also must undergo a competitive application and interview process.”

Program application forms may be picked up from the Lackey Municipal Building, Christian County High School, Heritage Christian Academy, Hopkinsville High School, and University Heights Academy. Applications are also available for download at www.hopkinsvilleky.us/summer.

Completed application packages must be received no later than 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, at the City of Hopkinsville, Mayor’s Office, Attention: Summer in the City Internship Program, P.O. Box 707, Hopkinsville, KY 42241.
