WKU Nursing Student Honored by National March of Dimes

wku1 300BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (6/19/13) - A student in WKU’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program is one of four nurses honored nationally by the March of Dimes.

Samantha Port of Campbellsville has been awarded a nursing scholarship for graduate and doctoral studies in the field of maternal-child nursing. Port, who is also a nurse at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, is conducting research on the rates of cesarean deliveries in Kentucky and how the rates both statewide and nationally have risen drastically.

Port will examine possible nursing interventions to decrease these rates of cesarean deliveries in order to help more women have full term pregnancies and health babies.

Qualified applicants for the March of Dimes graduate nursing scholarships are registered nurses currently enrolled in a graduate program in maternal-child nursing at the master’s or doctoral level. Applicants must be a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses or the National Association of Neonatal Nurses.

“These promising candidates are poised to make great strides in their fields, and the March of Dimes is proud to help them continue their education,” Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes, said. “We hope these scholarships will help them achieve their goals of improving the health of mothers and babies in their communities.”

The March of Dimes is the leading non-profit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premiere event, March for Babies©, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
