Miss Hoss’ Sweet Shop Brings New Life to Former Holt’s Location

GREENVILLE, Ky. (7/2/13) – Monday, July 1st, marked the "soft opening" of Miss Hoss' Sweet Shop, in the former Holt's Clothing Store location on the square in Greenville.

Many have waited in anticipation, watching day by day for months, as the unique store that combines homemade candies, cakes, cookies, and a host of other goodies, with freshly brewed coffee and pantry for early morning customers, and chicken salad sandwiches and other mouthwatering items for lunch prepared for opening.

But before the doors officially opened, owner Linda Vaughn Taylor decided to, in her words, "give credit where credit's due, by dedicating the store to the glory of God." She said.

Thursday night, June 27th, over 50 people were on hand at the store designed to make you feel you've stepped back in time, "like a little slice of Mayberry." Taylor joked.

"Last night was a blessing," she continued. "My brother, Mickey Travis, who is an ordained minister in Clifty, Kentucky, said a few words. Then my pastor, Tom Carol, of Browder General Baptist Church, led us in prayer. He blessed the building and the community. Mayor Ed DeArmond made the first official purchase, after which we had a ceremony where the first dollar went to God, as we handed it to the pastor. My brother then spent the second dollar, and we hung it on the wall." Taylor continued, turning and pointing to a frame on the store wall which contains a one dollar bill, and an empty space where another dollar bill should be above it.

"We hope that this will be a good conversation piece, so that when someone comes in and asks why there's a blank spot in the frame, it will give us a good chance to bring up God." Taylor explained.

Monday morning, the doors officially opened with cappuccinos and muffins. "July is 'Blueberry Month', so today we served blueberry coffee and blueberry muffins,” Taylor said. “For lunch we'll chicken salad and tuna salad sandwiches. We want to have as many homemade items as possible. We'll be making fudges, specialty cakes, specialty pies, and of course ice cream. We have some very talented cake decorators, we'll do specialty baskets. We'll also do special orders. Just call me ahead of time and let me know."

Miss Hoss' has already gotten a great running start, winning second place in its category at the April "Taste Of Muhlenberg County" competition, and supplying goodies for the recent Duncan Center "Mother’s Day Weekend Tea" event.

"The city has just been wonderful to us already. It's just been amazing. They've been supportive, they've helped me any way anyone could." Taylor noted.

In a prior interview with SurfKY News in February, Taylor explained where the store got it's unusual name.

"My prior husband was killed in an accident, and his nickname was Hoss, so I was always called Miss Hoss. I had planned to open a sweet shop much like this in the Kentucky Lake area when we were living there, but while we were in the process of getting it started he was killed in an accident. After that my kids and I moved back to Muhlenberg County. This is where I'm from. Truthfully, I lost interest in just about everything for two years, but now God has given me this opportunity, so I'm going to go with it," Taylor said, adding that now she has married Rick Taylor of Owensboro and he's "moving down here to the country. I always said I wanted a little store like something in Mayberry and God even gave me a "Taylor", she said with a smile.

Hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and closed on Sunday and holidays.
