GRADDOWENSBORO (8/29/13) – The Green River Area Development District (GRADD) is currently seeking a participant in the AmeriCorps Disaster Services program for an immediate opening with the GIS/GPS mapping department of GRADD.

In July, GRADD was awarded $453,250 from the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service (KCCVS) to fund 35 AmeriCorps program member slots—25 for the Senior Connections program and 10 for the new Disaster Services program—in Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster counties.

“We’ve successfully filled 34 of our 35 positions for Fiscal Year 2014,” said David Clark, GRADD AmeriCorps program director. “We’re just looking for one more quality candidate to collect area mapping data and to assist with an update of the regional Hazard Mitigation Plan.”

The recently launched Disaster Services program connects volunteers with local agencies such as county emergency management and Red Cross. In addition to increasing organizational response capabilities, these members will assist in public awareness efforts and help citizens develop preparedness plans and emergency kits.

Over the past 16 years, more than 400 area residents—ranging in age from 18 to 80—have participated in GRADD AmeriCorps programs.

In exchange for one year of community service, AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $12,100, an education award of $5,500, and health insurance.
