Blue Collar Comments – Questioning the City/County

bluecc300 BHOPKINS COUNTY, KY (9/10/13) – My name is Scott Rogers and I have a question for the citizens of Hopkins County. We have two bodies of government in our area. We have the City Council and the Fiscal Court. You can go before these two bodies of government and ask questions.

The questions that I have asked are regarding spending, with nothing to show for it. I’m referring to the Sports Complex, the Tech Center and the Hopkins County Library. The answers I have gotten back are nothing.

I went before the Fiscal Court on September 3. I had an Open Records Request from the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands about the Hopkins County Career and Tech Center. They are sending me a 41 page report of the Tech Center.

I went before the city and Fiscal Court, as well as the Board of Education, and talked about the spending in Hopkins County. The answer I got was, “There is no problem.”

I went before the Fiscal Court telling of the report and as I was giving my information, Mr. Wilson, one of the members of the Fiscal Court, leaned back in his chair and told the Judge that we needed to end this. So, the Judge told me that my time was over.

My question regarding spending has fallen on deaf ears. I was told by the judge that this is not their problem. Then whose problem is it?

There was a lady asking the same question in the Sunday paper on September first. She said that it was time to abandon the Sports Complex project. I feel the same way.

Just like the Tech Center, at the tune of six million dollars, they are walking away. There is a member of the Board of Education that told me that the Tech Center will be sold and we will get that money back. How can you sell something that is falling in and on unstable ground? Nobody in their right mind is going to buy a pig in a poke!

The Sports Complex is in a swamp. The ground has been mined above and below, and it is also wet lands. The library has buildings downtown that has been sold for $1.00 each. The Library is at the mall in a large room, and they get $400,000.00 from the city and the county each year. Now they have the Save-A-Lot building that has been empty for the last 8 months and there is still nothing being done, as the library has a $98,000.00 bill that they have to pay. The Board has spent $6 million dollars on the Tech Center, and they are walking away!

When you go before the city and the county, they tell you it is not their problem. Then you have a member of the Fiscal Court telling the judge, “Let’s wrap this up.” I ask the citizens of our county, let you and I wrap this up! We keep spending and spending!

So, in closing, whose problem is this? If it’s not their problem, I guess it is our problem.

Remember, election time is just around the corner!

I rest my case!

Scott Rogers
