Henderson Police Department to Offer ‘Drug Drop’

presc pills1 300HENDERSON, Ky. (9/24/13) – The Henderson Police Department will host a "Prescription Drug Drop," where residents may bring their unused medication to the department for proper disposal.

The program is for disposal of medications only. Police won’t accept medical equipment such as hypodermic syringes with needles, injection pens, or lancets.

Vitamins and supplements can be discarded by following the FDA’s guidelines:
Take items out of their original containers and mix them with an undesirable substance, such as coffee grounds or cat litter in a sealed bag, empty can, or other container to prevent the medication from leaking or breaking through a garbage bag. The medication will be less appealing to children and pets, and unrecognizable to people who me be intentionally going through your trash. Also, local retail pharmacies sell special envelopes at the pharmacy counter to allow people to mail unwanted prescription and OTC medication to a licensed, secure facility for safe destruction. Controlled substances are excluded from this program by law.

The Henderson Police Department "Drug Drop" will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of October (Oct. 5) and December (Dec. 7).
