hands2HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (11/21/13) – Jodi Powers Search and Rescue of Hopkins County will be donating their services this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23 and 24 to the victims of the recent tornados that hit across the tri-state area Sunday, Nov. 17.

“We will be working in Brookport, Ill., and the Hopkins County area off Red Hill Road this weekend,” said Scott Heltsley, of Jodi Powers Search and Rescue. “Brookport has a population of about 1,000 people. There were 300 homes damaged and 67 homes completely destroyed and three deaths. Even though it seems like its worlds away, it’s only 90 miles from us.”

One group will meet at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday for Red Hill Road at the Ideal gas station in Nortonville. The second group will be meeting at the Madisonville Kmart parking lot at 6 a.m., Saturday and Sunday for Brookport.

“We ask everyone who helps to bring gloves, boots and a sack lunch,” said Heltsley. “We will be cleaning up a lot of debris and managing chainsaws.”

Heltsley told SurfKY News that while the group's equipment is ready, monetary donations for gas is still needed.

“We originally thought we were going to need $500 for gas but turns out we only need $300,” said Heltsley. “If anyone is interested in donating money for gas, please feel free to call me or donate to our account at any Old National Bank.”
