Hooked on Science - Popping Cranberries

hooked science 300KENTUCKY (12/10/13) - You may have noticed it when you put cranberries into hot water. They pop! Using a few ingredients from around the house, you can discover why.

INGREDIENTS
• 1 Cup of Cranberries
• Water
• Pan

INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: Have an adult bring a pan of water to a boil.
STEP 2: Place 1 cup of cranberries into the boiling water and observe.

EXPLANATION
The pockets of air inside of the cranberries are heated when placed in the boiling water. The air expands, which causes the cranberries to eventually pop. Go to www.hookedonscience.org for more experiments that might get you and your family “Hooked on Science.”
