Early Learning Center Children and Families Receive Scholarships

Henderson ThelmaBJohnson Early Learning Center 300HENDERSON, Ky. (12/18/13) - The Raymond B. Preston Family Foundation has awarded $50,000.00 of scholarship funds to children and families at the Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center (TBJELC) who do not qualify for free preschool under income eligibility and/or disability guidelines.

Tuition spots are granted to children who do not meet these guidelines (150% of the poverty level). Among these tuition paying spots are still families who are within 200% of the poverty level (+$25,000.00). Under these guidelines and with assistance from the Raymond B Preston Foundation, 52 families will receive a onetime scholarship for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year. The families have demonstrated a commitment to their child’s education and funded half of their expected tuition costs. An additional six full scholarships will be awarded in the 2014-2015 school year.

The families/students will have to qualify for certain expectations in order to maintain their scholarship. Students must maintain a 90% attendance rate each month. Parents/guardians must attend both parent teacher conferences (one in the winter and the other in the spring). Parents/guardians must attend a minimum of two spring family events. If parents breach the contract, then the family will be required to pay the full amount of the scholarship within six months.

For more information contact The Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center, at (270) 854-0140.
