grease musicalGREENVILLE, Ky. (3/4/14) — The long saga of bringing the hit play and movie, "Grease, The School Edition," to the Felix E. Martin Jr. Hall may soon be over.

The play, featuring a cast of almost 60 students and a live band, was originally set for performances Valentine Day weekend. But bad weather prevented the show from going on.

The new dates for the play are this Saturday, March 8 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 9 at 3 p.m.

Now, with even worse weather this week, conditions have prevented the crucial last minute rehearsals, according to Leslie England, a drama teacher in the Muhlenberg County School System and director of the play.

"Usually on these snow days, MCHS Principal Donna Bumps and Martin Hall manager David Probus look at the driving conditions," England said. "If roads are too bad, there's no practice. If roads are passable, they will give me a window of time to allow for rehearsals. This is presuming the parents can drive the students to and from the school. We do not want students driving in these conditions at all."

As of Tuesday, March 4, no additional rehearsals had been held due to dangerous road conditions.

With such a major project, involving a stage full of actors, musicians, dancers, multiple level platforms, and the need for perfect timing, is there still time for those all-important full dress rehearsals?

"Knowing these students as well as I do, two days of working with the band and the microphones, and they'll be ready," England said ."That's the only thing we're lacking. I think we'll be fine."   

England noted that several cameos have been added to make this already electric production even more entertaining.

"Assistant Principal Jerry Hancock, of Muhlenberg East High School will have a part," England said. "Jeff Dickinson plays Vince Fontaine, the radio disc jockey who judges the dance contest, and Thad Mayhugh, is our teen angel."  

England noted that the live band will add a whole new dimension to the play. The group, made up of adults and students, under the direction of Melanie Smith, is made up of Donnie Johnson, Mark Woodall, Ryan Jones and Kirby Davis

"We 're still working on finishing touches for the song “Greased Lightning” with some help from . Wester's Body Shop supplying car parts. Carmel Rich, from the Muhlenberg County Music Museum, has supplied wonderful memorabilia from the late 50s to add to the authentic look of the stage. A lot of people from the community are helping to bring this all together," England said.

"It's amazing how many people love this show. I think it's the music, the fun, the dancing. Not too many musical are this popular. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. It just brings back memories for all ages," England said.

Has trying to bring such a complicated play to the Martin Hall stage made her think twice about next season?

"Not at all. Next year we plan to present, "The Wizard of Oz" England said.

The revised show times are Saturday, March 8 at 3 p.m.. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 9 at 3 p.m. If you purchased tickets for Friday, they will still be honored at any of the rescheduled performances.
