Confederate Railroad, Friday Cruising on the Strip Make for Red Hot Summer

confederaterailroad(Photos courtesy Carmel Rich, Central City Tourism Commission)CENTRAL CITY, Ky. (3/25/14) – Carmel Sheppard Rich, head of the Central City Tourist Commission, says Central City is cooking up one red hot summer for 2014.

Acts include Confederate Railroad, Rods and Ribs, Jason Crabb, Gospel Fest, the 13th Annual Everly Cruise In and the return of the monthly Friday Cruise-in, held the first Friday of each month from June through August.

"We're excited to be bringing back Friday Night Cruising on the Strip beginning June 6," Rich said. "We want to bring back the days when Central City had cars bumper to bumper on the strip, people hanging out with friends and families, checking out each others' cars, and just enjoying the weekend. We have talked to several downtown businesses about allowing people to park on their lots and talk to friends. The Cruise In will be the first Friday of each month, and end with the big finale, The Everly Brothers 13 Annual Aug. 29 will end the Cruise in."

Rich was happy to report that some Confederate Railroad fans are already booking their hotel rooms for the June 7 appearance of the country group in downtown Central City, during the Rods and Ribs Festival.

"We are finding out that a lot of fans of the band, who love to follow Confederate Railroad from show to show, and several have already booked rooms for the weekend of June 6," Rich said. "We were already expecting a great turn out for the Rods and Ribs Festival. But being able to get Confederate Railroad for June 7 will really increase the crowd size even more."

The group was voted the best new group at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1993, on the power of their first album, which included "Queen of Memphis," "Trashy Women," "Jesus and Mama," "She Never Cried," and "Daddy Never Was the Cadillac Kind."

"That is quite a lineup of hits on one album," Rich said. "I don't think many groups can top that list. It's an honor to have them here in Central City."

During the day on June 7, the expert cooks take center stage in the Rods and Ribs barbecue competition, Rich noted.

"Anyone interested in competing in the barbecue competition should contact Rick or Rosanne at the Central City Fire Department at (270) 754-2345," Rich said. "Vendors should contact the Central City Tourism Office at (270) 754-9603, or Tammy Piper at the Central City Convention Center, at (270) 757-1724.”

Gospelfest returns Tuesday, Aug. 26 starring Jason Crabb, a big hit at the 2013 festival.

"We will also have other special guests for Gospelfest to be announced soon," Rich said.

The 13th Annual Everly Brothers Rock-N-Roll Cruise will begin 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. It will include a car show, motorcycle show, a poker run, and entertainment to be announced.

"This is going to be a busy time for downtown Central City, and we are looking forward to it," Rich said.

Other events and music to be added, according to Rich.
