The victims are selling items online and potential “buyers” will send the seller a check for an amount well over the purchase price.
The “buyer” then contacts the seller and instructs the seller to cash the check and send him a check for the overpayment.
The check that the “buyer” has given to the seller is written on a bogus account and the victim is then held responsible for reimbursing the bank.
The victim must not only pay back the amount of the bogus check he cashed, he/she also loses the money he/she has sent back to the "buyer."The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department urges citizens to be aware of these types of scams and as always use caution when buying/selling items online.
