In Concert April 15 – The Hunts

GREENVILLE, Ky. (4/3/14) — A lot can happen to a family of nine musicians in one short year.

In January 2013 a musically gifted family named The Hunts drove their family RV from Chesapeake, Va., to perform at the Felix E. Martin Jr. Hall.

The Hunts return to perform again 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 to Felix E. Martin Hall.

Last year’s concert was a huge success, and since then, parents Susan and Clint Hunt have put their instruments away and assumed other responsibilities that make a nightly concert by The Hunts successful.

Clint Hunt told SurfKY News the group was hoping for a recording contract, just over a year ago.

That dream is now a reality.

The Hunts have signed a six-record contract with Los Angles label Cherrytree Records. The label has a solid track record, with a lineup of artists that include Sting, Keane, Robyn, and five-time Grammy nominee Feist.

Millions of television viewers have also heard at least a portion of The Hunts song, "Make This Leap." A 30-second edit of the song is used as background music for a recent Milkbone television commercial.

Jessi Hunt, one of the family’s 24-year-old twin sisters, told SurfKY News the family's method of learning music was simple.

Susan Hunt is an accomplished string instrument instructor.

“When we were each 5-years-old, we started lessons on the violin with Mom,” Jessi said. “As we got older, we each found different instruments we loved to play and just started teaching ourselves.”

Branching out from their mom’s violin lessons has proved a successful formula for the group.

Twins Jessi and Jenni, along with their talented siblings, have gone on to master a stage full of instruments, which include violin, viola, cello, guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, bass, piano, accordion, drums, hand percussion and vocals.

The Hunts -  Jessi, Jenni, Josh, Jonathan, Jordan, Justin and Jamison - range in age from 16 to 24.

“Now Mom is more of a behind the scenes person,” Jessi said. “She handles everything from selling T-shirts and CDs after the show to making sure we are all dressed and fed. Dad takes care of the sound system, along with driving the bus. Dad always gets us there.”

The Hunts' bus has seen a lot of America. The family has performed in every state in the U.S. except Alaska, Hawaii and Maine.

“Growing up in a bus with eight other people made for some fun times,” Jessi said. “Mom and Dad would play songs with us until we’d all go to sleep. It was a great way to grow up.”

According to Jessi, there is going to be a lot more traveling for the band this summer, since their new label is booking concerts for a heavy tour.

"And with a six-album contract, we have got a lot of song writing to do," Jessi said.

She added that the family can’t wait to get back to Martin Hall.

“We love coming back for return concerts and seeing people we met at the first concert,” Jessi said. “We’re ready to get back to Greenville, for sure.”

Tickets are on sale now at Felix E. Martin Jr. Hall, or phone (270) 377-3115. The Hunts music is available on iTunes and at Cherrytree Records.
