Major Muhlenberg Road Projects Found in Two-Year Road Plan

yonts c 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (4/17/14) — Funding to widen and straighten two roads in Muhlenberg County near the West Kentucky/Wendell Ford Center exit and the Muhlenberg High School West Campus is included in the 2014-2016 state Road Plan approved by the Kentucky General Assembly on Tuesday, State Rep. Brent Yonts announced today.

“Hopefully, these improvements will lead to some economic development venues near where the roads converge at the West Kentucky/Wendell Ford Center,” Yonts, D-Greenville, said. “It will be a great improvement all the way around.”

The improvements are found in two separate projects: The first will widen KY 181 from Hwy. 601 to near the West Kentucky/Wendell Ford Center. The second will straighten Dean Road leading from the bypass to KY 181. The projects will take approximately four years each to complete, and each will cost several million dollars.

“These two roads are corridors that will serve a new multi-million-dollar central athletic complex sponsored by the Martin Foundation and the Muhlenberg County Board of Education via a near-century long lease agreement,” said Yonts. The Martin Foundation provides funding for various projects in Muhlenberg County—educational and otherwise—under the perpetual trust of Felix Martin, who bequeathed millions of dollars for the perpetual benefit of Muhlenberg County.

“The central athletic complex is a flagship item in the intensive park development plan being developed in the county,” said Yonts. “Widening of KY 181 and straightening of Dean Road will create ease of traffic as well as improve safety on these two roads, both which are extremely narrow.”

State-authorized funding for the KY 181 project is $4.8 million in the next biennium through fiscal year 2018. State-authorized funding for the Dean Road project is $2.75 million in the next biennium through fiscal year 2019.

Rep. Brent Yonts represents the 15th House District, which includes all of Muhlenberg County and portions of Hopkins and Christian counties.
