Donnie Johnson breaking the world record for the masters class of competitersGREENVILLE, Ky. (6/15/14) ― World, American and state records were broken on Saturday during the 2014 Southern State Power Lifting Championship.

Sheer brute strength was on display as the PR Zone hosted the Southern State Championship.

The America Powerlifting Association and World Powerlifting Association certified competition lured competitors from surrounding states in a bid to find out who can lift the most weight in the various classes.

The room was filled with a lot of energy as the power lifters encouraged and rooted each other on for every lift.

The standout contestants of the day were Donnie Johnson, Brooke Morrison and Cindy Johnson.

Donnie Johnson, owner of the PR Zone set a world record in the Masters Class by dead lifting 435 pounds.  The previous record was 430 pounds.

Cindy Johnson, owner of H&R Block in Greenville and wife of Donnie Johnson, set a state record as she dead lifted 170 pounds in the Masters Class with the previous state record being 165 pounds.

Brooke Morrison, a special education teacher for Muhlenberg County Schools, broke the American record when she dead lifted 310 pounds in the Super Heavyweight Division with the previous record being 300 pounds.

Jon Alderson from Wickliffe, Ky., currently listed as the world's strongest man under 185 pounds, attempted to lift 700 pounds in Saturday's competition.  Though his attempt failed, he  successfully lifted 675 pounds.

"I have lifted 700 pounds during workout sessions,” said Alderson. “This was the first time I attempted this weight after a day of competition."
