HOP FOUNDATION 300HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (8/19/14) — The Hopkinsville Community College Foundation, Inc. has selected 31 Hopkinsville Community College students to receive a $500 Atwood Textbook Scholarship to be used for the fall 2014 term.

“The rising costs of textbook can be difficult for students to manage,” stated Yvette Eastham, executive director of the Foundation. “According to the 2013 U.S. Government Accountability Office report, textbook prices have increased 82 percent from 2002 to 2012. Considering this data, we feel that the Foundation’s fundraising efforts are focused where there is need,” continued Eastham.

During the 2013-14 academic year, the Foundation awarded $22,000 in aid.

The Foundation re-named the scholarship in December for Don and Beverly Atwood. Don has been a longtime member of the Foundation board and made the suggestion in 1992 to establish a scholarship that would assist students with the ever-growing cost of purchasing books. Beverly retired from HCC in December after 42 years of service. Mr. Terry Hamby of Cadiz worked to ensure that the textbook scholarship was funded and able to continue on in perpetuity with the $50,000 that he single-handedly raised in 2009.

The Don and Beverly Atwood Textbook Scholarship Fund is open for additional donations at any time. Donors may call (270) 707-3731 for more information.
