educationCHRISTIAN COUNTY, Ky. (4/3/13) – Nearly 5,000 students from across Kentucky competed in the Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship March 28 in Lexington. The students represented 400 schools and more than 100 school districts.
 
P-12 students showed what they know and can do with technology in the arts, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and many marketable career skills by participating in more than 50 technology categories including student-designed projects, products, services and live demonstrations.
 
In Showcase Projects, three schools were named best in state and will represent Kentucky at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Conference in San Antonio June 23-26.
 
• South Christian Elementary, Christian County (Walk-n-Roll for Cystic Fibrosis and Rett Syndrome)
• Maurice Bowling Middle School, Owen County (Crack the Code: 21st Century Accommodations)
• West Jessamine High School, Jessamine County (WJHS Math Support)
 
 Seven other schools placed in the top ten in Showcase Projects:
 
• Russell Primary School, Russell Independent, (How to be Bully-free)
• William H. Natcher Elementary School, Warren County, (Natcher’s Bookshelf Comes to Life)
• Carroll County Middle School (Run for UR Life)
• Maurice Bowling Middle School, Owen County (Codes to Get You in the Reading Mode)
• Northern Middle School, Pulaski County, (STEMS Leave ROOTS)
• Bowling Green High School, Bowling Green Independent (Bridging the Digital Divide)
• Todd County Central High School, Todd County (Rebels Speak)
 
The Showcase Projects featured community service and instructional projects as well as those that demonstrated a specific technical expertise in the use of hardware, software or STEM topics. The projects were judged on creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, and critical thinking, problem-solving and research among other criteria.
 
Special awards and scholarships were also given in the area of human talent to those who have demonstrated a strong knowledge or support of technology and STLP.

STLP is a project-based learning program that empowers students in all grade levels to use technology to problem-solve, create content, learn and achieve. It was established in 1994 by the STLP State Advisory Council, which is composed of teachers, students and community leaders. The mission of STLP is to advance individual capabilities; to motivate all students; and to create leadership opportunities through the use of technology.
 
The program is open to all students in all grade levels in every school in Kentucky.
