AaronWidenerOWENSBORO, Ky. (4/8/13) – This is the fifth in a series of columns submitted to SurfKY News from the youth of Majesty Christian Academy in Owensboro, KY. This article, authored by Aaron Widener, speaks on the concept of treating mentally challenged children fairly and equally.

You shouldn’t make fun of mentally disabled kids because they’re people, too. They have feelings, just like you and I. They may be different, but that’s not a reason to pick on them or make fun of them.

I know a lot of mentally disabled kids, because my aunt works at the Wendell Foster Campus here in Owensboro. I believe in those kids and you should, too. They have a soul just like all of us.

So, the next time you see someone like this, try to help them with something like getting food off a shelf, or help them across the street, because that is the polite thing to do. I help them out all of the time, to be polite.

We can put effort into making a better world so these individuals will be treated with respect and not be picked on anymore. I believe we can do it if everyone works together.
