OWENSBORO, KY (3/29/12) – A man convicted of killing a young girl in March of last year has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Jeff Kotarek, age 47 of Owensboro, was convicted of three crimes in the hit-and-run death of Madalynn Matlock, a 13-year-old girl from in Daviess County. In a last ditch effort to get a reduced sentence for his client, Kotarek’s attorney had requested probation instead of jail time.
Instead, the jury handed down three 5-year sentences for each conviction, which included reckless homicide and tampering with physical evidence.
Madalynn’s family believes the punishment should fit the crime. "There can never really be enough. There's no eye for an eye on this one," said Madalynn's mother, Jennifer Matlock.
"I think probation is a joke. He left her on the side of the road for dead," said David Matlock, Madalynn’s father. "I hope every day in prison is a nightmare for him," David said.
