Second Structure Fire In 2 Days Claims A Life, Underscores Need For Prevention

caution FireOWENSBORO, KY (5/25/12) – The Owensboro Fire Department (OFD) responded to a Structure Fire call at 731 Jed Place in Owensboro yesterday, May 24, 2012 at approximately 8:00 PM.

Firefighters found the home to be fully involved upon arrival. Once contained, OFD personnel found a 62 year old male victim, Raymond D Chapman, inside the residence.

OFD Chief Steve Mitchell told SurfKY News that the causes of the two most recent fires on Jed Place and 2nd street as well as three other fires are still under investigation. Updates will be provided as they are released to the media.

Nikki Hawkins of the Western Kentucky Territory Chapter of the American Red Cross said that the ARC is providing a family member of the victim with financial assistance after the fire, which Chief Mitchell said completely destroyed the interior of the home.

The two recent blazes highlight the need for fire prevention in homes, and Hawkins said that there are many resources out there to help. Among those is the Fire and Safety Prevention Checklist, which can be viewed by clicking here.
