Daviess County EMS Surprised at Lack of Wind Damage

(12/21/12) – There may be unreported damage in the blistery winds blowing through Western Kentucky Wednesday and Thursday, but as far as official reports, the pleasant surprise is nothing major reported, at least not to the state's emergency management offices contacted.
 
Pat Hardesty, Kentucky Emergency Management Regional Response Manager for Region 2 said in Frankfort, and Daviess County Emergency Manager Richard Payne agreed. Both say little if any damage has been reported to them over the past two days, with only minor power outages.
 
Payne, whose office covers Daviess County only, says he was "surprised our office has not received any calls regarding damage. We expected at least a few calls about Christmas lights being down." But he added that in this case, no news is good news.
 
All is not over in our first bout with winter weather as we usher in the official start of the season.
 
According to the nation's official weather source NOAA you'll be ok for now if you stay in Western Kentucky, but other parts of the Midwest and East will not be so lucky. Also, our turn at bad weather could possibly hit on Christmas night.
 
NOAA reports "Blizzard and Winter Storm Warnings through today (Friday) or Saturday for the Great Lakes and central Appalachians, where heavy snow will combine with strong winds to produce dangerous travel conditions. Meanwhile, low temperatures tonight in the areas mentioned will drop into the single digits or slightly below zero for the north central U.S.
 
Locally, expect more gusty winds today [Friday] near 40 miles per hour and a high near 40.

Clear, with a low near 20 tonight with gusts up to 23 mph.
 
Winds will diminish tomorrow with a sunny Saturday for last minute shopping and a high around 40. Clear Saturday night with a low of 29.
 
Sunshine and 50 is our high on Sunday with a low of 40, and a 30% chance of showers.
 
Christmas Eve, a 50% chance of showers and a high of 53, with a low Monday night near freezing.

Christmas Day should be sunny and a high of 44, low
 
Our next bout with real winter weather could come Christmas night with a chance of rain, snow and even sleet, and a low near freezing.
