oboro tennis 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/12/13) – A proposed $2 million tennis court at Moreland Park is the closest it’s ever been to becoming a reality since the idea of it was first conceptualized about five to six years ago.

Noel Clayton, one of the co-chairs of the Owensboro/Daviess County Tennis Association, told SurfKY the fundraising committee will continue to seek financial support for the project through the rest of the year. The committee has already received funding pledges both from the city of Owensboro and from Daviess County Fiscal Court, in addition to significant amounts through private donations. The city of Owensboro pledged a matching grant of up to $500,000, which the committee reached with the county’s donation.

“That puts us in a lot better situation now when we go to fundraise,” Clayton said of the city and county pledge contributions.

Clayton said the committee has raised money in the past, and returned funds to people who asked for their money back when the court wasn’t able to be built the first time. He said members were careful to only reach out to people who were willing and able to support the idea, and that philosophy hasn’t changed.

“We didn’t go out and ask people who didn’t have money, or interest in tennis,” Clayton said. “We looked for people with a passion for tennis.”

Clayton said the proposed court, which can be viewed online at www.owensborotennis.net, was modeled after a court recently built in Evansville, Ind.

He said Moreland Park is the best place in Owensboro to build a new tennis court, and called the idea a “win-win for the community.”

Committee members and city officials will continue to meet over the next few weeks as they finalize the project, with the work tentatively being put out for bid and work beginning by summer.
