Nyama Drum Ensemble to perform at Belmont and North Drive-March 15

hop international fest 300HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (3/15/13) – Performers of the Nyama Drum Ensemble will present a dynamic, engaging performance of West African Drum and Dance at Belmont Elementary and North Drive Middle School on Friday, March 15. The performance serves as an introduction to the different types of music that will be presented at the Hopkinsville International Festival on Saturday, March 16.

This interactive multicultural assembly will engage students in thoughtful awareness that lends itself to exploration of unfounded stereotypes and biases and aid in dismantling myths, unlearning biases and alleviating fears.

The goal of the performance is to introduce students to cultural traditions that have had major contributions throughout history, but are often overlooked in textbooks; educating them about the richness and diversity of African culture; showing them the powerful communicative power of the drum; sharing the language of the drum and dance; and engaging them in a participatory program that lets them explore a culture about which they might have little knowledge or preconceived notions.

The Nyama performance will also take place all day Saturday, March 16 at the James E. Bruce Convention Center as part of the 4th Annual Hopkinsville International Festival.
