Board of Education General 01 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (4/9/13) – The Owensboro Board of Education met Tuesday in accordance with its weekly School Board Luncheon Program at Sutton Elementary School on Lewis Lane.

The meeting was concise this week, as there wasn’t much business to discuss coming back from the spring break holiday. Larry Vick, superintendent, reported to the board that the school district had received the results from a Monitor report from the district’s Title 1 and Title 2. The report found no financial errors in the program. Vick reported that in Title 1, the district lacked in parental involvement components that they should have in place, so the district is making an effort to remedy that. As for the district’s Title 2 program, the report indicated that the Owensboro Public Schools program would be used as a model for other districts to follow, officials said.

The most discussed topic in the meeting was the lack of wireless access points in some district schools, such as Sutton Elementary. This is partially due to the lack of E-Rate funding, particularly in schools like Sutton, who may not qualify due to a lesser number of students enrolled in the free or reduced school lunch program. E-Rate funding is a part of a program which provides discounts to assist most schools and libraries to obtain affordable telecommunications and Internet access. It would also serve to assist the school district in MAP testing. Every school in the district has some form of wireless internet. However, not every classroom has access to a wireless access point. The district has applied for E-Rate funding for two schools, Newton Parrish Elementary and Sutton Elementary, but some within the district have reportedly expressed doubt such funding will be obtained. Vick recommended to the board that the district that the board plans to go ahead and fund the installation of these access points in-house and that installation should proceed this summer. The district would then be better equipped to conduct MAP testing, which is heavily relied upon within the school district. MAP testing assesses reading, mathematics, and science.

At the close of the meeting, the board entered into a closed session with attorneys to discuss financial information. The board will also meet in a closed session, Wednesday, April 10, to discuss the superintendent search that is underway to replace Vick, who is retiring.
