praying manMADISONVILLE, Ky. (5/2/13) – Created back in 1952, the National Day of Prayer’s Mission is to assemble prayer in America and to revitalize personal repentance and righteousness in one’s culture.

Established by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress and signed by President Harry S. Truman, the National Day of Prayer is an annual observance that is held on the first Thursday of May. This observance invites individuals of all faiths to pray for our nation.

Today at 11:45am, members of the community gathered around the front of the old courthouse in downtown Madisonville to pray for our nation. The church chimes played the National Anthem, Central High School’s ROTC presented the colors and led with the Pledge of Allegiance. Music by Candace Bennett and April Blankenship graced the ears of the audience. Speakers and presenters prayed discussed and prayed again for our nation. Connie Harralson, who helped organize this day of observance expressed, “It is important to have prayer in America and we set aside one day a year to do it when we it needs to be important 365 days a year. God has tremendously blessed America, it’s time for America to bless God.”

The National Day of Prayer is a basic part of our heritage and signifies for us, as a nation to remember and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with crucial decisions. This observance also allows us to surpass differences and bring together citizens from all backgrounds.

Mrs. Shirley Dobson, NDP Chairman, reminds us: “We have lost many of our freedoms in America because we have been asleep. I feel if we do not become involved and support the annual National Day of Prayer, we could end up forfeiting this freedom, too.”
