MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (5/13/13) – The Duncan Center kicked off the Mother's Day weekend early with a Meet and Greet held Thursday, May 9th. This month the featured artists, Terry Stewart and his daughter, Amanda Shanks, demonstrate their enormous talent in charcoal.
From President John F. Kennedy to Johnny Depp, the list of drawings of celebrities and non-celebrities alike illustrates this father and daughter's ability to create lifelike images using only charcoal on paper.
The members of the crowd attending Thursday's Meet and Greet agreed that, even after a close up look, it is still truly hard to imagine one was not looking at a photograph.
Shanks graduated from Bremen High School in 1973. He enjoyed several of Mr. Bill Thomas' art classes and has continued hobbies in art ever since. Though most of his post-school art included paintings, his daughters Amy and Amanda encouraged him to return to portrait drawing and introduced him to charcoal in 2011.
Amanda graduated from Muhlenberg North High School in 1999 and went on to graduate from Brescia University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education. She was introduced to charcoal during her first college drawing class, and it has been her preferred drawing media ever since.
This exhibit is open to the public in the Duncan Center gallery through now through May 31st.
The Duncan Center is located at 122 South Cherry Street in Greenville.
