Owensboro Seal 01 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/22/13) – Following a brief public hearing at which no one came to address them, Owensboro City Commissioners approved a proposed $97 million budget for the new fiscal year starting July 1. City officials told the commission the budget is balanced.

Also during the commission’s regular meeting, members heard from Owensboro Human Relations Commission Aloma Dew, who asked the commission to consider a budget increase for the human rights group.

During her presentation, Dew talked about some of the work the Human Relations Commission has done as well as goals it has for the future, such as the need for an administrative assistant and the development of more events that “increase cultural awareness and diversity.”

Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne said he supports the Human Relations Commission and the work it is doing. He said city officials would be looking at all budget requests before the end of the current fiscal year in June to see where funds could be allocated.

“This community is becoming more diverse all the time,” he said.

City commissioners also approved a series of ordinances, including one to annex unincorporated territory on Old Hartford Rd. into the city limits, and another that would allow the closure of a right-of-way on Elsmere Street between E. 11th St. and McJohnson Ave.
