Movie Review – Man of Steel

movie review 300KENTUCKY (6/17/13) – The following is a review of the recently released movie, “Man of Steel” by Journalist Aaron Frasier.

"Man of Steel" was released in theaters over the weekend. Notable cast for the film are Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, and Michael Shannon.

The film is the origin story of Superman, told at a completely different angle than any Superman film or television series has ever gone.

The film opens with a long portion on Superman's home planet, Krypton. This was done very well. Russell Crowe as Jor-El is probably the best role in the whole film. The world of Krypton is made more alive than it was in the Christopher Reeve films. You actually see a culture and a way of life that Krypton has, and it's not just a ball of crystal structures. Krypton reminded me a lot of a planet in Star Wars.

Whereas the Krypton of the earlier films was rather boring, this portion of the film was excellent.

Following the destruction of Krypton, the landing of Superman's ship is briefly shown and it cuts straight ahead to him as a 33-year old man. This is where it takes a different turn. If you go into this film expecting to see the Superman you have always known, you will probably be surprised. This film was not traditional Superman.

Clark Kent is working as a fisherman. It becomes apparent that he has been working a lot of odd jobs for years. He seems to be on some kind of self-discovery quest, though you never actually are told that.

As you continue seeing him do these things, flashbacks are shown to his upbringing under Jonathan and Martha Kent. As Clark works his way through these jobs, he eventually finds a spacecraft in the arctic that is like that of the fortress of solitude in other Superman films. This is where he learns who he is.

So, Clark Kent thus becomes Superman. He does not yet take to the dual identity of a reporter. That doesn't come until the end of the film. When he becomes Superman, an army of Kryptonians arrive on earth seeking to destroy Earth and rebuild Krypton. The final hour of the film is an intense battle of Superman and humanity trying to stop the Kryptonians.

Some critics have said there was too much action in this film, I disagree. When you are talking about superhuman aliens at war with one another, it's not going to be one punch and the battle is over. There is going to be some damage. I didn't feel the film lacked there.

There were several things that I was disappointed with, being a Superman fan. A few things in the film were opposite of what Superman would do. The story was still good. I was fine with them re-imagining Superman, but some of it went too far.

I wasn't disappointed with the film, but I also wasn't overly impressed. Cavill did not shine as the iconic Superman the way Christopher Reeve did.

While the people I saw the film with gave it a 10 out of 10, I'd rank "Man of Steel" at about 6.5 out of 10.
