Owensboro Health Hires New CEO

pattrson omhsOWENSBORO, Ky. (8/28/13) - Philip A. Patterson has been named president & CEO of Owensboro Health. An offer was extended following Monday’s meeting of the Owensboro Health board of directors.

Patterson is expected to begin work Nov. 1.

“The entire board is excited about this next chapter in our history. Philip is full of energy. He is a visionary with proven experience in strategic development of an integrated health system,” said Deborah Nunley, chair of the Owensboro Health board of directors. “We have an excellent leadership team, medical staff, and employees – all committed to a unified mission to heal the sick and to improve the health of the communities we serve.”

Since 2009, Patterson has been CEO of Bon Secours Charity Health System, a three-hospital system with net patient revenue of nearly $500 million. The three hospitals (611 beds) are Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY with 156 beds; Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY with 377 beds; and St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick, NY with 78 beds. The system is part of Bon Secours Health System, a 14-hospital Catholic system.

Patterson has held CEO or senior management positions in health care in the Hudson-Delaware Valleys, Minnesota, Alabama, Texas and Louisiana since 1994. Patterson earned his Master of Health Administration from Georgia State University; a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham; and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Auburn University. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

He and his wife, Crystal, have two children.

“The board’s decision was based on months of careful consideration, dialogue and exchange with the candidates. I commend the (search) committee for the work they have done – for their countless hours, leadership and guidance,” Nunley said.

The committee received feedback on the finalists from many stakeholders, including representation from internal leadership, medical staff, elected officials and community leaders.

The search committee was comprised of Deborah Nunley, Chair; George Henderson, Finance Chair; Janice Scherm, Community Needs & Accountability Chair; Bob Knight, MD; Charles Bea, MD; and immediate past board members Alan Braden and G. Ted Smith.

UPDATE: In a follow-up interview, Nunley told SurfKY News the search began with almost 770 interested parties, including those who applied as well as people encouraged to apply by Witt Kieffer of Chicago, who conducted the search on behalf of the hospital. She said from there the list was narrowed to 10 and the local search committee chose five to meet, starting in mid-July.

She said the finalists then went through a pre-determined process which included meeting with stakeholders and others involved with the hospital, as well as participating in an online survey.

Patterson will succeed Jeff Barber, who is retiring. Nunley said Barber has agreed to stay on as head of the hospital until Patterson takes the reigns in November.
