susp pack1OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/16/13) - Owensboro Police responded to a report of a suspicious item at the corner of Second St. and Carter Rd. earlier today (Monday), but it was later confirmed that the item was non-hazardous.

Local police and rescue squads blocked off a perimeter around the Ramada Inn as the bomb squad set up a robot at the location to determine if the item was "anything of importance", according to Sgt. J.D. Winkler.

Local police and city officials both received anonymous calls concerning the item, which has since been confirmed as a briefcase that was in a wagon. The wagon was chained to a pole near a gas line at the intersection, and police identified it as a homeless man's attempt to secure his belongings. The suspicious briefcase was investigated and confirmed that it contained personal belongings and wasn't a hazard to the community.

Roadways on both Second St and Carter Rd were closed for a short period of time today, but have since reopened.
