CENTRAL CITY, Ky. (2/3/14) — More than one hundred people packed Calvary Baptist Church in Central City at a candlelight prayer service for The Watson family.

The Friday, Jan. 31 service was held to remember the eight children and their mother, LaRae Watson, all of whom perished in a tragic house fire early Thursday morning.

Those who came prayed in memory of those who died, but also wanted to pray for the two family members that survived, Chad Watson, and his 11-year-old daughter, Kylie. Both are in Vanderbilt Hospital in critical condition.

Family friend Megan Williams told SurfKY News before the service that the couple had been a huge part of the church.

"This is the church where Chad and LaRae met years ago,” said Williams. So many of us were very close to the entire Watson family. There's not a person in this church that doesn't think the world of them. This is an unthinkable shock."

Chad Watson has worked closely with the church's children's ministry and that the tragedy had affected everyone in the community, not just in the church, Williams said.

Church member David Reger echoed comments made by many that knew the Watson family.

"They brought a lot of joy to this church and they will be missed,” said Reger.

Pastor Tim Burton stood at the front of the congregation, pointing to the nine candles that were placed there to represent each member of the family who perished in the Thursday fire.

“But as we look back on their lives, let us also remember Chad and his daughter Kylie as they fight for their lives,” said Burton. “We must be grateful in believing that those two will pull through.”

The Rev. Adam Brown of Temple Baptist Church in Central City is Chad Watson's cousin.

Brown told the gathering that while growing up he and Watson fought like brothers and argued like brothers.

"But we loved each other like brothers as well,” said Brown. “After the fire, Chad told me he tried and tried to save his family. He went back in that burning house three times to save them. But now they've gone to be in the hands of a loving God. Chad has proven he is a hero. He demonstrated his Christian faith by the fact he was willing to lay his own life down to save his family.”
