WLES Teaching Budgeting, Financial Literacy

dcps1 300DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (4/28/14) - Third grade students are participating in an ongoing, interactive and educational economics program at West Louisville Elementary School.

Teachers Cyndy Garrett, Johnna Gray and Brittany Greenwalt have developed a system that teaches budgeting and financial responsibility to students, with an introduction to “real life” scenarios.

Students are “paid” $100 each week for attendance and completing classroom jobs. Students have the opportunity to apply for various assignments and are selected on the basis of qualifications and demonstrated work ethic. Students can also earn extra money by participating in class and demonstrating higher order thinking skills.

If students neglect homework or have behavior issues, they are assessed fines.

At the end of each month, the students “cash in” their weekly checks. They pay $120 each month for “rent” and can spend the balance in a classroom store, which offers such items as QR codes for lunch with a favorite teacher, extra computer time, a homework pass, hat-wearing privileges and other fun activities; or items such as toys, books and school supplies. Students could also save up their money for a year end trip to the movies.

“As we reflect on this program, we feel it has been beneficial for the students,” said teacher Brittany Greenwalt. “Students have learned about saving and spending money wisely, about wants and needs, and being responsible. Students now have insight into how checking and banking works.”
