DCPS to Host Orchestra Open House

kids-w-violinsOWENSBORO, Ky. (5/6/14) — The Daviess County Public Schools district is hosting an open house for parents and incoming sixth grade students who have signed up for or are interested in orchestra classes next year at Burns, Daviess County or College View middle schools.

The orchestra open house is scheduled from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Burns Middle School.

Samples of good quality violins, violas, cellos and string basses will be available for parents and students to play. Information about instrumental rental will also be available.

Karen Higdon and Kelsey Davidson, orchestra directors at the three DCPS middle schools, will be available to answer questions and provide additional information about orchestra opportunities for students, and will help students find instruments.

String orchestra instruments include violin (fiddle), viola, cello and double bass.

“Orchestra students have fun, create music and learn skills that they share outside the classroom,” Higdon said. “Some students become professional players. Some play in church, become recording engineers or teachers. Others become scientists, carpenters, doctors, computer technicians, farmers, homemakers or artists. Orchestra is for anyone who likes music and wants to play it.”

The value of orchestra instruction goes far beyond enjoyment of music.

“Research has indicated that students who study music in school are more likely to do well on standardized tests such as the ACT,” Higdon said. “Orchestra also refines skills that college admissions offices and potential employers value, such as discipline, teamwork, reading and math skills.”

Families wanting more information about DCPS orchestra opportunities, and those who are interested but will not be able to attend the open house are invited to contact Karen Higdon or Kelsey Davidson: Karen Higdon (270) 852-7600 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
