breakingnews1OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/6/14) — Deputies from the Daviess County Sheriff's Office diffused a hostage situation Monday night saving the hostage and her captor, who had allegedly promised harm to both the hostage and himself.

According to a DCSO report, deputies and Kentucky State Police were dispatched to 1530 Wrights Landing Road at 7:50 p.m., after Lincoln Trails Behavioral Health staff members notified emergency personnel that they were on the phone with James Cummings, 45, who reported he was holding a hostage.

The staff members reported that Cummings advised them he was hearing voices and that he was suicidal. The staff also reported Cummings advised them that he was holding his mother hostage and that he'd been shooting at people, who aren't really there, the report said.

Mental health workers also advised police that Cummings had threatened to kill his mother. During the time Cummings was on the phone with mental health workers, police were setting up a perimeter around the residence. At one point, the mother got on the phone and was instructed to come outside, when Cummings was not around, the report said.

When the mother was out of the residence, deputies were able to take her to a safe area away from her son. Cummings then went into a detached garage, where deputies were able to make their way to him, and take him into custody without further incident.

Cummings was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
