“One of the main goals was to make it look like a franchise,” My Home Sales and Leasing owner Allan Moore said.
He said his experience working with franchise-operated furniture and appliance stores provided him some insight into how to design the store to give the store a franchise look rather than a family-owned business. For example, the choices of brands and the variety of items available were key to achieving that goal.
Owning their own furniture store is something Moore said he and his wife, Amanda, had been planning for quite some time. The two of them traveled to several different states as they considered where they would end up opening their store, but Moore said Kentucky was his first choice. Meeting a local business owner, Jeff Anderson, and developing the opportunity for a partnership between the two sealed Owensboro as the location for what Moore hopes is the first of several such furniture and appliance stores.
When asked how he picks which furniture pieces to include in his store, Moore said it can be a challenge sometimes.
“Everybody has different tastes,” he said, adding that sometimes he sees something he doesn’t like but adds it anyway. “Just because I hate it doesn’t mean someone else is going to.”
Moore said in addition to taste, the most important consideration is quality.
“I try to pick something that’s a little higher end,” he said. “If you lease it for two years, it has to look as good as it did when it was bought or the customer has the option to send it back.”
Due to space issues, Moore said he isn’t able to stock everything he’d like to include, but can special order pieces on request. My Sales Home and Leasing is located at 710 Salem Drive by South Frederica at the Bypass in Owensboro.
