Muhlenberg County High School Congratulates 2014 Seniors

beginning of the graduation lineGREENVILLE, Ky. (6/6/14) ― It was a warm, comfortable evening as Muhlenberg County High School Class of 2014 graduates celebrated their rites of passage from school life into the rest of their lives during commencement exercises Friday, June 6 at the MCHS Mustangs Stadium.

The stadium was packed with parents and well wishers with some people having to stand to view the ceremony.  The invocation was given by senior Quinten Travis, who was given a great deal of applause as he retired from his part in the ceremony.  After MCHS Principal Donna Bumps gave the welcome, MCHS salutatorian Allie Poole gave a heartfelt speech about how the world has changed since she and her classmates started school, and how it is still changing.  She got quite a bit of applause when she mentioned a local historical event, namely, the missing of 21 days of school due to snow, delaying their departure from high school.  Poole's speech did get a little emotional as she mentioned Denise Baker, a MCHS teacher who passed away in May,  and who had had a great impact on her life.

The ceremony also featured music by Ciara Cobb, Deanna Oglesby, and Ryan Jones. who sang a  "For Good" from Wicked.  The song was beautifully sung and well received by the audience.

Afterward, class valedictorian Zachary Tarter gave a speech that centered on today's definition of being a success and how, while looking for happiness in the future, we miss what we have now.  His speech was poignant and thought provoking.

Tarter then pulled out his camera and asked the senior class to strike a pose while he took a picture and said, "I love you all."  His speech and his actions brought about quite a bit of posing and applause from his fellow students.

Finally came the presentation of diplomas given out to the students by MCHS Superintendent Randy McCarty and Bumps.  There was a playful attitude in the air as the diplomas were handed out. Various students tossed giant beach balls into the air and across the student body.  There were many congratulations and cheers from the audience as various students walked across stage to receive their diplomas.

The program closed with the benediction being given by Allie Poole and the graduation pronouncement being given by Bumps.
