muhl school board 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (6/25/14) — The book 'Glass Castle' was on the agenda again as the Muhlenberg County School Board held a special meeting to take care of its June business.

Jeffery Dukes was first on the board's agenda as he spoke to the inappropriateness of the book in regard to its use in the classroom during a student's junior year.

Dukes told the board he believes the book is pornographic and deals with issues such as child molestation and incest. He then proceeded to read some selections from the book, which were highly sexual in nature and contained foul language.

Dukes then proceeded to list two Supreme Court decisions that he believes gives the school board the right to determine which books are used in the class room. He gave an example of a superintendent from Kentucky that removed books from a school that his office deemed inappropriate.

After listening to Dukes' comments, the board voted on what course to take in regard to the book.

Kelly Tarter, board member, said that it would not be a good idea to disagree with the board's attorney and made a motion to allow the decision to remain with the site based committee at the school.

The motion was seconded and unanimously approved.

The board, with little discussion, voted unanimously to accept the second reading of KSBA Policy Update No. 37 and a second reading of Procedures Update No. 18.

The board also approved the payment of its June bills before adjourning.
