Two Vehicle Collision with Injuries

powderly-accidPOWDERLY, Ky. (7/8/14) — A two-vehicle collision with injuries occurred late Monday night on Cleaton Road and Career Way in Powderly.

The site is in the general location of two other accidents recently.

About 10 p.m. Monday, July 7 Belinda Payne pulled out onto Cleaton Road from Career Way and was struck by Mason Weaver traveling southbound on Cleaton Road. Weaver said he attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to.

"I saw the vehicle pull out in front of me so I put on my breaks and cut left to go into the ditch,” Weaver told SurfKY News at the scene. “The brakes locked, and I slid straight striking the front of the car."

Payne was taken from the scene in an ambulance but her two passengers, Betty Davenport and Gene Turner, declined medical attention.

Davenport said that she did not see the other vehicle coming and the impact was a surprise. Davenport, who is Payne's mother, believes her daughter was not seriously injured.

Officer Piper of the County Sheriff's Department was in charge of the accident scene. Piper said the evidence from the scene was pretty straight forward. "The truck was traveling southbound on Cleaton Road when it struck a car that was pulling out of Career Way," said Piper.

Piper said two other accidents that have occurred on Cleaton Road in the past several days. Sheriff's department officials have talked with Magistrate Cozy Chappell about putting up some lighting on the county road to improve visibility. They are also suggesting that the road needs lines and signage to make it safer.

Currently, the speed limit on Cleaton road is 55 mph, but Piper believes the speed limit should be reduced to 45 mph.
