Roy Kyle and Hot Rod Cruisers Ready to Rock Labor Day Weekend

Roy-Kyle-and-Hot-Rod-Cruise

CENTRAL CITY, Ky. (8/5/14) — Roy Kyle and the Hot Rod Cruisers are ready to rock the Central City Labor Day Weekend Cruise-In stage at 8 p.m. Aug. 28.

Kyle along with brothers John and Patrick Calhoun of Owensboro make up the trio that spotlights music from the 50s and 60s.

Kyle said although he was born in Springfield, Ill., he has always called Muhlenberg County "home." Kyle now lives near Rochester, and performs throughout the tri-state area. He says he was honored to be one of those chosen to perform "Claudette" and "Living Alone" at the tribute to the late Phil Everly held at the Merle Travis Music Center soon after Everly's death.

"Muhlenberg County and music have always been a huge part of my life," Kyle said. "I have always loved to sing, and when I was about 14 years old I decided music was what I really wanted to do with my life. I first learned guitar, and then went on to learn piano and other instruments from there."

Kyle says that like many others, the music of Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and Conway Twitty were his biggest early influences, and others still seem to love the early sounds of rock and roll as well.

"We specialize in playing the best of rock and roll from the 1950s to the 1980s," Kyle said. "People must love this music, because we sure stay busy playing. The group's drummer is John Calhoun. We have played together off and on for about 18 years. John's brother, Patrick plays bass. They are both great to perform with. They are very professional, and I just love playing music with them. Rick Huff also sits in with us sometimes, playing the pedal steel guitar."

Kyle says there's nothing he likes better than playing rock and roll for his home county crowd.

"My other group, 'Nitelife', performed at last year's Central City Cruise-in," Kyle said. "We had a great turn out, and people just love to get into the music. They really seem to enjoy it."

John Calhoun told SurfKY News, he is also looking forward to the Labor Day celebration, and enjoys learning many of the early rockabilly songs.

"These songs have stood the test of time," Calhoun said. "Many by the Everly Brothers and others may seem like easy to learn tunes, but very often the harmonies are very difficult to learn, and it gives you a new respect for the roots of rock and roll."

Kyle said the Hot Rod Cruisers will be including some Everly Brother songs at the cruise-in concert, adding that although both of his groups stay busy, they are available for bookings by calling (270) 820-4773.
