'Happy Feet' Off to a Running Start This School Year

Happy-Feet-log-2MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (8/6/14) — The Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet Shoe Program left a trail of more than five hundred smiling faces last year in Muhlenberg County, by providing new shoes for students across the county.

The program, which focuses on providing shoes to every student in need in the Muhlenberg school system plans to get off to a running start this school year as well.

The program is made up of volunteers from the school district, that work closely with school coordinators throughout all county schools to reach those in need of shoes.

Happy Feet started in Union County and has expanded quickly into Hopkins, Daviess and several other western Kentucky counties. Volunteers in Muhlenberg County are now stepping up to take on this enormous task.

"I just started on the committee in June and I am amazed at the progress so far," said Keisha Brigance of the Muhlenberg County Happy Feet Board. "It really is an awesome program to have in Muhlenberg County. Last year, the organization provided 550 pairs of shoes to Muhlenberg County students. We are hoping to exceed that number with this year's shoes. It takes an average of only thirty dollars per pair of shoes for each child.

Brigance said that the first fundraising event for the Muhlenberg Happy Feet program will be held Friday, Sept. 19 at the Central City walking trail behind the Central City Convention Center.

"We are putting on a 5K GLOW run/walk," Brigance said. "Our goal is to have at least one hundred participants."

The program, according to organizers' Facebook page, was developed to help remove one of the stumbling blocks to optimum school performance, a pair of shoes.

"The group's simple, but important intent is to make a happy student, thus becoming a better learner," the site notes. "We are working to provide a new pair of shoes to every student identified by coordinators at each of the schools. We are a nonprofit group that is funded by donations and fundraisers. You will receive a receipt for cash donations for your own records to use as a charitable tax deduction on next year’s taxes."

Donations can be mailed to Kim Latham,112 Fairway Drive Central City, Ky. 42330 or to Beverly Carver, 968 Kennedy Brasher Road, Greenville, Ky. 42435. Make checks payable to: Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet. In the notes section, please put MUHLENBERG COUNTY so it will go in this county's fund. You can also drop off monetary donations at Soderling Eye Care in Greenville.
