road closed blue 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/3/14) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has issued a permit to the City of Owensboro to close the Kentucky 2262 Ohio River 'Blue Bridge' in Owensboro on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014.

The Kentucky 2262 Ohio River "Blue" Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic from 9 a.m., CDT, to 2 p.m., Saturday, for a Bridge Day event. The bridge will be available for pedestrian use only during that time.

There will be a marked detour for vehicle traffic via the US 231 Ohio River "Natcher" Bridge. The detour will add about 10 miles to a trip between Reo, Indiana and downtown Owensboro.

For information on Owensboro Bridge Day activities go to http://visitowensboro.com/ai1ec_event/bridge-day-walk-the-blue-bridge/?instance_id=97321.

Also known as the Blue Bridge and the Glover Cary Bridge, the 4,622 ft. structure connects Kentucky 2262 and Indiana State Route 161 over the Ohio River at Owensboro. Approximately 7,300 vehicles cross the Ohio River on the Blue Bridge between Kentucky and Indiana in an average day. The structure opened to traffic in September 1940 as a toll bridge. The tolls were discontinued in 1954.

The Blue Bridge is at Ohio River navigation mile point 756.3.
