Hopkins County High School Assessment Schedule Changed

act prepHOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (5/7/13) – Hopkins County Schools is changing its high school assessment schedule as a result of the move on the state level to use only paper-and-pencil end-of-course tests.

The Kentucky Department of Education announced the switch Sunday after about 25 districts reported slow connections and dropped connections last week from the ACT Vantage testing system that is used to administer the exams. The issues, which also affected students testing in Alabama and Ohio, caused the online system to be suspended last week.

While ACT has been attempting to re-open the online system, KDE decided to move to the paper-and-pencil tests in order to stabilize the EOC assessment program.

This has resulted in a change in the assessment schedule in Hopkins County high schools.

The K-PREP on-demand writing assessments, originally set for next week, will now be given starting Wednesday, May 8. HCCHS will assess 10th-graders on May 8 and 11th-graders on May 9. MNHHS will assess 10th- and 11th-graders on May 9.

Hopkins County Central and Madisonville North Hopkins high schools had planned to administer online end-of-course exams this week to students taking English II, Algebra II, Biology and U.S. History. Those will now be given next week, using paper and pencil.

“We expect to have them no later than May 13, which is Monday,” said Jason Clark, district director of secondary instruction and assessment. “We hope they are here earlier so we can get them distributed.”

MNHHS will give the Algebra II and U.S. History exams on Tuesday, May 14; English II on Wednesday, May 15; and Biology on Thursday, May 16. HCCHS hopes to start giving the tests on Monday, May 13, but this will depend on when the assessments arrive in the district.

“The schools had already planned some enhanced learning opportunities for this week,” Clark said. “Those will continue as previously scheduled.”

Testing continues on the original schedule at the elementary and middle school levels. The Elementary School KPREP is being given this week. Middle School KPREP will be given May 13-17.
