OPS Board Raises Drop Out Age to 18

ops3 300OWENSBORO, KY (03/22/2013) – On Thursday, March 21, 2013, at the Owensboro Public Schools Board of Education monthly board meeting, members approved Owensboro Public Schools Superintendent Larry Vick’s proposal to raise the compulsory school attendance age to the age of 18. In the state of Kentucky, at this time, students are permitted to drop out of high school before the age of eighteen only with a parents’ signature. According to Vick, this policy change will not take place within the next school year, but could be put into effect for the2014-2015 school year.

“This is not the same world we grew up in twenty years ago where you could leave school, get a job at seventeen, and raise and support a family. Our kids, unfortunately, do not understand this,” Board member Cate Lauzon said during the meeting.

Julie Ellis, information officer for the Owensboro Public School system, told SurfKY news that in the state of Kentucky, fifty-five percent of school boards need to approve this measure for it to become the laws statewide.

Also during the meeting, three student groups from Owensboro High school and Owensboro Middle School were recognized for achievements in areas from academic to theatre competitions (see related story).

Two requests by the board were approved for updates to Newton Parrish and Estes Elementary Schools. These measures would renovate the lobbies of the schools which would make it impossible for visitors to gain access to a school without first going through a receptionist or security point. At Estes Elementary, these renovations would run no more than $3500, according to maintenance director Bill Smith, because the renovations only consist of adding a wall and security door. At Newton Parrish, however, the proposed renovations are expected to cost closer to $20,000.00. The secretary’s and receptionist’s office, along with the security airlock, are being completely renovated. All the work is being done in-house, and won’t be contracted out. These renovations are being funded by the district’s general fund.
