puzzle pieces 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/6/13) – Owensboro Adult Day Care Puzzle Pieces is continuing to grow its influence in the Owensboro area as well as expanding its ability to better provide services for its clients with special needs.

This week, Puzzle Pieces Director Amanda Owen announced that in conjunction with several area businesses the agency is collaborating to build a “Sensory Garden” on its Owensboro campus. The sensory garden will be a therapeutic center on the campus of Puzzle Pieces that will give clients a place to be able to have therapy sessions and spend time outside during the summer months.

“This has always been a vision of mine for Puzzle Pieces,” said Owen. “Right now, we have a black canvas in our back yard.”

The first issue to be handled is that Puzzle Pieces has little or no privacy outside on their campus. BB&T, as a part of their Community Give Back program, is asking its employees to volunteer with Puzzle Pieces to begin the initial process of laying the foundation for the sensory garden and installing privacy fences to enclose the garden. Planter boxes are also on the agenda to allow Puzzle Pieces clients to learn skills such as planting and tending fruits, vegetables, and flowers and helping to maintain the garden.

Other area businesses are donating items to be used as well. Cook’s Green House in Philpot will be supplying flowers, Gordon’s Tru Value is donating benches, and Marlene’s Garden Center will supply a bird bath.

“By the time our sensory garden is completed, I want it to be a community example for serving people with special needs,” said Owen. “The sensory garden is more of a safe haven for individuals with special needs. It’s a place where they can tap into their sensory panel, and it will be a great stress reliever for clients and staff alike.”

Owen expects the first phase of the sensory garden to be finished in June so Puzzle Pieces’ summer session will be able to enjoy it. The overall implementation and construction of the project should be completed by the spring of 2014.

Puzzle Pieces is a 501(c)(3) non-profit activity day center serving individuals with intellectual disabilities 8 years of age and up in Owensboro.
