OCTC Students Win Art Awards

octcs 04 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/20/13) – Four Owensboro Community and Technical College students earned top honors during the college’s spring semester student art exhibition.

The Best in Show went to Whitney Sandefur for “Carnival Escape,” oil on canvas. The 3D Purchase Award went to Denise McArthur for “Turtle,” wire sculpture. The Drawing Purchase Award went to Avery Papalouca for “Emerald City,” Prisma Color. The Painting Purchase Award went to Bridget Ceballos for “Love is Old, Love is New,” oil on canvas.

The awards were selected by an independent juror from student work submitted for the exhibition at the Dayman Gallery. This semester’s juror was Anthony Hardesty, Registrar for the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art. OCTC Associate Professor of Art Monty Helm said the exhibition has become a tradition enjoyed by everyone on campus.

“It supports the artistic and creative endeavors of our students. This is usually their first art competition,” Helm said.

The pieces will become part of the college's permanent collection displayed on campus. Works also may be seen in latest issue of the college’s SKYLARK literary magazine, which features photos of art pieces in addition to literary works from faculty, staff and students.
