Daviess County Public Schools Earns Energy Star Designation

ops3 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/20/13) – Daviess County Public Schools district has earned Energy Star designation for 15 of its 22 buildings for the 2012-13 school year, with nine of these buildings earning this designation for the first time.

On a 100-point scale, the district’s overall compiled score is now 82. All 12 elementary schools, two middle schools and the DCPS Central Office have earned the privilege of displaying the Energy Star plaque. The honor is based on energy use compared to buildings of similar size across the country.

In the area of energy efficiency, Audubon, Burns, Highland, Meadow Lands, West Louisville, Whitesville elementary schools; College View and Daviess County middle schools; and the DCPS Central Office will join previous honorees Country Heights, Deer Park, East View, Sorgho, Southern Oaks and Tamarack elementary schools in the elite group of buildings that are in the top 25 percent of all schools/education facilities in the United States.

According to Jim Barr, DCPS construction facilitator, safety coordinator and energy manager, the remaining buildings that have not yet achieved this distinction are quite close, including the district’s two largest buildings, Apollo and Daviess County high schools. “We are developing plans to increase efficiencies that will be implemented in a few years,” Barr said. “These gains should easily push our two largest buildings into the ‘winners lane.’”

The Energy Star system was developed by the U.S. Energy Department and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, whose goal is protecting the environment through energy efficient products and practices. The Energy Star designation is determined by comparing the size of a building to 12 months of utility usage.

Under the leadership of its Board of Education, the DCPS district has made a commitment to responsible stewardship of resources, including utilities. Almost 20 years ago, the Board adopted the use of geothermal systems in all new buildings and installed electronic energy management systems in all school buildings. High efficiency lighting has also been installed in our buildings.

The district’s “Green Team” meets regularly to review opportunities for managing policies and procedures designed to reduce or eliminate energy usage. As a result, the district recorded a 6 percent reduction in energy usage in 2009 compared to its baseline period usage (2006-2008) – which translates to a savings of approximately $60,000.

The district’s primary goal is to educate its students to be responsible citizens. DCPS schools have adopted “green initiatives” designed to encourage students to “reduce, reuse and recycle” to protect our environment and its resources.
