OWENSBORO, KY (1/19/12) - The Owensboro Police Department continues to receive complaints pertaining to fraudulent solicitations asking for money and merchandise.
In some cases, the suspect states that they are in need of bail money. Other cases involve suspects asking that merchandise be purchased and then sent to them with the promise of future payments that are never provided. Some are stating that the victim has won a prize but need to pay the taxes up front before receiving the item. In all of these cases, verification of information about the caller could have prevented the loss of money and personal information.
Here are a few tips to remember to prevent you from becoming a victim of fraud.
Never give out your personal information to anyone that you cannot identify or verify. (i.e. name, date of birth, social security number, bank account number, credit/debit card number)
Never agree to provide money to someone unless it is a transaction that you have initiated.
Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Call the Owensboro Police if you feel that you or someone you know has been a victim of a fraud.
